When puppies are born on our farm they quickly become part of our family. We invest a lot in care, socializing and preparing these beautiful little ones for their forever home. When they leave our home it is very important for us to know that they will be well cared for the rest of their lives.

Folks, if you do not like to care for a dog and have no intention of grooming one – then please don’t get a puppy from us. Seriously, we mean that. So before you make a decision to buy one of our babies please take the time to read this.

With the proper equipment and dedication it is possible to keep a Samoyed’s coat impeccable all year – our adult dogs are proof of that.

That “fluffy, stuffed toy dog sensation” you feel when snuggling with a Samoyed is compliments of its double layer of hair. The first layer is designed to keep him warm and the outer layer protects him from the elements.

It is imperative that a Samoyed is combed and brushed a minimum of four times per week using the right tools. Typically a Samoyed will lose its undercoat twice during a year. During this time you need to brush them daily.

You’re going to need a rake or comb with teeth that rotate, (they must glide through the hair easily). You don’t want to scratch your little one so you will also need a pin brush with rounded ends.

The first step is to take your comb or rake and starting at the bottom of the section you want to groom, gently part the hair with one hand and begin to comb the hair in the direction it naturally lays. Continue to comb each section until you are not removing any loose hair. We think it works best to start at the head and move down its back to the tail.

We find that they cooperate with grooming best when we talk to them and assure them that they are being good puppies and tell them how pleased we are with them. Take a few breaks and play with them during the process. Praise them lavishly and they will come to enjoy this time with you.

The next step is to brush the coat. You can brush both layers of hair or only the top layer. If you want your Samoyed to look like a champion you want to brush the hair to stand out from the body. So brush the hair in the opposite direction of the way it naturally lays.

The tail is sensitive, so just lightly hold the tip of his tail and gently brush it with your other hand. The ears, elbows, stomach and rear end all require attention to detail as these areas are typically the most likely to get matted. You may find it helpful to shave the hair near the anus and genitals so there is less chance of it becoming matted.

This is the perfect time to check your puppy for fleas and ticks. Look for moving black dots, which could be fleas. Black specks could be flea dirt. Seed ticks can also be small black dots. We highly recommend running your hand over the body to check for lumps or anything unusual. Early intervention is key to keeping your puppy healthy.

When you look at the pristine coat of a Samoyed you may be thinking they must be bathed daily. This is not true. We find that they only need to be bathed twice a year. Obviously if your dog gets exceptionally dirty he will need to be bathed more often.

Before bathing a puppy ensure that he has been well brushed. (This will help prevent tangled fur.) Put cotton balls in his ears. Put a non skid mat in the tub and have plenty of towels and treats close to you. Close the door.

Wash the puppies face with a washcloth so you don’t get water in the eyes and nose. Wet the hair well then begin to massage a whitening pet shampoo in from the neck down. Rinse well and dry the hair with a power dryer.

Check the nails and wash the ears twice a month. Only cut off the clear tip of the nails. If you cut the nail where it’s dark it will bleed profusely and hurt your dog. If you’re afraid of hurting your pet, ask a veterinarian or pet shop to show you how it’s best done.

Dogs get plaque on their teeth and need to have their teeth brushed at least twice a week with dog-specific toothpaste. We also recommend giving your puppy “dog dental chews” on a regular basis.

In our experience, a well cared for Samoyed is so beautiful that you will find it difficult to go anywhere without people stopping to admire your puppy. The reward of your investment in the care of this “smiling puppy” will be his unparalleled loyalty and devotion.
